PRP Store History
On August 17, 1986, the Pine River Pond Association named its first Board of Directors. It was an exciting time for Pine River Pond. The new Board, consisted of Ray Ayers, Mary Richards, Lorraine Paul and Don Cormier. These four volunteers set out to build an association that was “Dedicated to promoting the welfare of Pine River Pond and its environment”.
The Pine River Pond Association started with setting dues of $2 (raised to $5 in 1987). So, the new PRP Association had a very tight budget, but lots of ideas. With a dedicated Board and passionate volunteers, they could only do so much without the need for additional funds.
It was in 1987 that John Bowker of Lord Road proposed the idea of a book about Pine River Pond. John, along with a “dedicated crew of assistants” created the book, along with a map to help raise funds for the Association.
July 2, 1988 marked a special day for what would become two Pine River Pond traditions: the first annual fireworks and the beginning of what would later be known as the PRP Store.
On that date, a celebration marking the publication of the Pine River Pond book was held at the Lundgren’s. The book sold for $10 and the map $3.50 (note that both of these are still for sale at the PRP Store today). The book and map were available from Carol Lundgren, Ray Ayers and Mary Richards. Over 200 people attended the July 2nd event with another 50-75 in boats. Bucky Farrin, creator of the song “The Pines of Ole Pine River” taught the song and Ron Cordero shot off professional fireworks.
In 1989, with pen and ink drawings, Judy Brenner created the first Pine Rive Pond calendar which sold for $7. The Pine Rive Pond Association now had 3 items for sale: Pine River Pond books, maps and a calendar.
The first PRP apparel was added in 1990. Sharon and John Bird handled sales of sweatshirts, hats and t-shirts. In 1991, due to the “current economic climate”, the association decided to “postpone” restocking PRP clothing and simply continued to sell remaining inventory of items. But, 1992 brought back the apparel, adding polo shirts, painters caps and beach towels to the already popular t-shirts and sweatshirts.
Judy and Don Cormier took over selling Pine River Pond apparel, maps and books for the next 2 years. It was in June, 1993 that the first reference to calling it the “PRP Store” occurred. The store was now selling t-shirts, polos, sweatshirts, cap, towels, books and maps.
In 1994, Jim McRobbie came home from the annual meeting of the Association to announce to his wife Boni that he had volunteered them to take on the PRP Store. This would be the start of 15 years (1995 – 2009) that the McRobbie’s would run the PRP Store. During that run, the PRP Store grew tremendously to include baseball hats, tote bags, duffle bags, make-up cases, shorts, jackets, ceramic mugs, travel mugs and the now very popular ice-cream!
Deb Dunn on Grenier Rd followed up running the store for the next 5 years before the store moved to its current location at the Daniels in 2015.
Because of your support, the PRP Store has grown into a major fundraiser for the Pine River Pond Association. The PRP Store has 280 sku’s, takes credit card and Venmo payments and is the central location to pay your annual dues or make contributions to the firework fund. Each year, the profits from the store increase, with over $10,000 raised annual for the Association in 2021. But, best of all, the PRP Store is still your destination for Ice Cream!
