Thanks to all those who participated in the 2016 Loon Census. Observations are part of a statewide snapshot of the loon population, and coincides with loon counts on the same day in Vermont, Maine, and New York.
This year 526 observers covered 121 NH lakes during the count on July 16th, and turned up a few surprises including a late nest on nearby Ossipee Lake, and a count of loon chicks on Streeter Pond – the first in over 40 years!
A total of 445 adult loons were tallied, 3 immature loons and 74 loon chicks. Better weather is thought to have contributed to a greater turnout and a slightly higher number of adult loons observed this year than last.
The Loon Preservation Committee thanks you again for participating in the annual loon count!
